If you want a good "modern" classic, try "All the King's Men" by Robert Penn Warren!. It won the Pulitzer prize!. It's about a politician (Willie Stark) and his right hand man (Jack Burden) and how they run his campaign to run for Governor!. It's full of lies, corruption and deceit!.
The characters are fatally flawed, but still possess redeeming qualities!.

I read it for the first time as a senior in high school and I have read it every year since then!.

::EDIT:: I'd highly recommend "Crime and Punishment" by Dovstyesky!. (sp) That's a good read as well!. It is about a man who commits a crime and how he deals with his conscience afterward!. Of course it has layers of symbolism, so that's fun to look out for too!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Les Miserable by Victor Hugo-
It's basically 3 stories that are connected!. It's pretty much about love and redemption!. It's a really good story, but rather long!.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
It's a coming of age story about a poor girl in Brooklyn!. Easy to read but still one of my favorites!.
Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
It's about 4 women and their lives and the lessons they learned!.

Oh, and I really enjoyed Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, both by Jane Austen and both good old fashioned love stories!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
