Yes, Oedipus definitely did change his view on fate by the end of the play!. All of his life he had felt he could escape the fate predicted for him at the beginning of the play (to marry his mother and kill his father), but ironically, in trying to avoid this fate, he is actually fulfilling the prophecy!. By the end of the play, he realises that he cannot escape his fate, no matter what he does, (I can't remember any particular quotes but they are there at the final realisation when he realises what has happened)!.

Personally, I believe in fate, although not in the 'it was fate that we met' way!. I believe that on some level, our lives are mapped out for us, however, we can change how we get to these places and how we do things and how we act along the way!.

I don't really know why I think that, I just think that everything happens for a reason and that there must be something up there mapping out our futures and lives!. Maybe, however, it may be that I just don't want to expect full responsibility for my actions so I like to think that there is something that controls them so I don't have to take the blame!

I'm not sure what it would take to disprove my belief, perhaps a really clever philosopher who can argue the case against me, however I have yet to come across a person who can dissuade me!.

Hmmm!. Oedipus was more or less "governed by external forces", but really, his ignorance comes from him!. I don't really think it was fate, it was his ignorance & choice to disregard the early warning he got at the beginning that lands him in deep water!. But i guess at the end he finally learns the value of the prophecies!. As for me, i don't really believe in "fate", although i do believe everything happens for a reason!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

This story seems to say something about how "prophecies" are often self-fulfilling!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
