Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
She and Percy Shelley were visiting Lord Byron in Switzerland, reading each other ghost stories to pass the time, when Byron suggested that they each write their own supernatural story!. Mary described her "vision" this way
"I saw the pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together!. I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life, and stir with an uneasy, half vital motion!. Frightful must it be; for supremely frightful would be the effect of any human endeavour to mock the stupendous mechanism of the Creator of the world!." She was not asleep at the time!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

***I have amended this answer after further research and two thumbs down!. I now have a reputable source:

Hungarian Countess Erzsébet (Elizabeth) Báthory (1560 - 1614) believed that by "bathing in the blood" of young girls, she would never age and could live forever, beautiful and untouched by time's corrosive hand!. Over thirty local girls were captured or lured to Elizabeth's estate, never to return!.

Eventually, rumors of her atrocities reached King Matthias' ears and he sent Gy?rgy Thurzó, the Palatine of Hungary, to have her "arrested!." With her nobility and gentry at risk of damage, she was allowed to remain at her vast estate under "house arrest!." She died four and a half years later!. Her accomplices, however, weren't quite as fortunate and had their fingers ripped out before they were thrown on to a fire to burn to death!.

I've slightly embellished this account, however, the gist actually occurred!. In fact, both Bram Stoker (author of "Dracula") and Mary Shelley (author of "Frankenstein") may have been quite familiar with this story and could have been influenced by it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Mary Shelley was inspired to write "Frankenstein" by her visit to a hilltop castle--with a panoramic view of the Rhine Plain!. Locate approximately three miles south of Darmstadt, Castle Frankenstein is steeped in a blend of fact and legend, which transcend regional curiosity!.
