Question: If I were to be writing a novel--!?
If I were to be writing a novel and I introduced a new character--a dog--and it was a male, how should I refer to it!?

Like, for example, do I refer to it as an "it" or "he/him"!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

A living thing will usually have he/him or she/her!. Dogs have names, of course they have he/him!. Things that we don't humanise so much - that are not real charactors in that sense, or with not easily distinguisably gender - mostly things like birds, rodents, insects - will sometimes be refered to as "it"!. But things like dogs, cats, horses etc get the he/she treatment!. Especially if it's an actual charactor, not a passing animal with little or no involvment in the plot!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, I am also writing a book about dogs, and it depends!. If you want to let the readers know the character right away, let them know his name and then go into detail about him, like what he looks like a such!. But if you want it to be mysterious about him, then refer to him as "him" or "he"!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A he!. if it's one of the main characters!. But if it's just in one part, a short part, then you should call it an it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

he/him!. that is referring to the dogs gender so yeah!. cool your writing a novel! i will to! in the NaNoWriMo (google it!)

awesome!!! Www@QuestionHome@Com

Your choice! Personally, I would avoid "it" and give the dogs name then refer to him by name!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He/Him!. Would you refer to any of your other characters as "it!?"

I didn't think so!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
