You could say the theme adresses a particular issue and makes an argument or statement about it!. "Love" is not a theme, that's a very broad term without any statement!. "Love defined by sacrifice" is a theme!. Take East of Eden!. It involves tangled family relationships "Family" is not a theme!. "Reconciliation between fathers and sons" is a theme!.
