Atticus means that he has to make his decisions based upon what HE feels not upon what the rest of the town will think!. He knows that he will have to live with the decisions he makes in the case of Tom Robinson, and he believes that Tom is innocent so he sees it as his responsibility to help him!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Very simply, Atticus feels he needs to follow the principles he believes in rather than succumb to the will of others!.
