Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The biggest change in Jem is his attitude towards his father, Atticus Finch!. There are several events that cause this, though some are not shown in the film!.

1!. Jem thinks less of his father because he will not buy him a gun, like other fathers do for their sons!. When the mad dog is spotted in town, the sheriff has Atticus shoot the dog; Jem asks why!. After Atticus shoots the dog, the sheriff tells Jem, "Didn't you know that your father is the best shot in the county!?" Jem sees his father in a new light!.

2!. After Jem has a run in with the old lady, Miss Dubois, down the block, Atticus has Jem read to her everyday!. After Miss Dubois passes away, Jem learns to respect his elders, even if he does not like them!. This part of the story in the novel, but is hardly mentioned in the film!.

3!. When Atticus is chosen to defend Tom Robinson, Jem discovers that his father is a courageous man!. First Atticus prevents a mob from lynching Tom while he is in jail!. Second, Atticus earns the respect of the community while defending Tom in court, even though he ultimately loses the case!. Third, in the confrontation while Bob Ewell outside the Robinson place, Ewell spits on Atticus!. Atticus, being the better man, turns the other cheek and walks away!. Jem sees courage and dignity in his father though those events, changing his view on what it is to be a man!.

BTW!. I would suggest reading the novel and watching the movie again!. Both version of "To Kill a Mockingbird" are great; they are one of my favorite books and films!.

> "xanna d"- You are so right!. "To Kill a Mockingbird" is one of my top five great books!. And the film is one of the few that does justice to a novel it is based on!. I gave my nephew a copy of the book for Christmas last year; she loved it and has read it twice since!.

PS!. Thank you for your years of teaching!. A good teacher is a gift to the world!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Start and end -- Compare Jem's behavior at the beginning of the book where he is stalking the phantom boogie man, Boo Radley, with the end of the book where he takes on a real boogie man, Bob Ewell!.

Event and people that had an effect on him: 1) Mrs!. DuBoise, who is barely included in the movie, so you have to read the book chapters about Jem's relationship to her!. Very important!. 2) When Atticus shoots the rabid dog, Jem learns that his father is not whimpy about guns, he is cautious and respectful!. 3) Jem's talks with the black reverend and the town drunkard while the trial is taking place - also not covered in the book!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
