Descent into Hell is a dual-story of salvation and damnation!. There are two main characters in the book, Pauline Anstruther and Lawrence Wentworth!. Pauline is the positive and Lawrence the negative!. Through Pauline, William's introduces the idea of substitutiary atonement!. She cannot solve her terror but must learn to give it up and give it over to another to carry!. Lawrence Wentworth chooses to prefer his own fantasy over reality!. Williams is similar to C!.S!. Lewis in the belief that, if God does exist, then He is the highest and ultimate reality!. To prefer illusions and lies is to prefer hell!.
