Yep, all those sound like good choices! I will tell you what I read when I was 13 and they made a huuuge impression on me; I enjoyed them immensely:

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott - absolutely amazing book about four sisters and their mother, just about growing up, family/friends/finding yourself!.!.!.well basically a classic with good reason to be!. Great characters you can relate to!. There are lots of sequels too!

Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry by Mildred D!. Taylor - this book totally affected me!. It's about a girl called Cassie in 1930s America!. She's African American and has to deal with racism and other troubles as she grows up!.

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens - this is a great classic that even if it seems a little slow to get into at first is well worth it!. Tells the story of the character Pip in Victorian England!.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck - really moving story about two men!. Simply written but very meaningful!.

Anne of Green Gables by L!.M!. Montgomery - I got addicted to the series of 'Anne' books when I was 13!. They're just the simple story of a girl in the 19th century Canada growing up when she moves to a new town but it's so easy to relate to Anne and her situations you can't help but love it!.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte - this is a MUST!. I've sort of saved the best for last, hehe!. This is a classic of all classics, telling the story of orphaned Jane, whose life story is told!. There's romance, mystery, a bit of scary, disturbing stuff, childhood difficulties and adult predicaments!. It's at once moving, entertaining and gripping!.

Hope this helps!. Oh and do read Anne Frank's diary, it changed my life!. One of the best books ever of non-fiction!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

1984 isn't written about olden days it's a very depressing view of the future in a post nuclear war totalitarian London written in 1948 (hence 1984)!.

It's a classic and a great book, but it's miserable, heavy as hell and possibly rather much for 13 years of age!.!.!. no offence I read it at 15 and in hindsight that was too young!.!.!.!. I just wanted you to know before you took it out!.

Olden stuff !.!.!. how about Dickens or Austen !?Www@QuestionHome@Com

out of those 3 i have only read Anne Franks diary but i think its well worth reading!. its such a good book, and sad too as you know that she died but still managed to write a full diary of everything that happened to her during hiding!.

also you could read some Shakespeare plays, i love them all so i recommend them all!.

also you could try reading Mice and Men that is a really good book too!.

Hi !
The Ghormenghast trilogy by Mervyn Peake ;
http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Gormenghast!.!.!.
TitusGroan
Gormenghast
TitusAlone
http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Titus_Groan!.!.!.

Plot introduction
The book is set in the huge castle of Gormenghast, a vast landscape of crumbling towers and ivy-filled quadrangles that has for centuries been the hereditary residence of the Groan family and with them a legion of servants!.
At the beginning of the novel, two agents of change are introduced into the stagnant society of Gormenghast!.
The first, more obvious agent of change is Titus Groan, the heir to Lord Sepulchrave, the seventy-sixth Earl of Groan!. His birth interrupts the daily rituals which are practiced at all levels of the castle society, from the kitchens to the Hall of Bright Carvings in Gormenghast's upper reaches!. However, the novel only covers the first two years of Titus' life, and he plays a minor role!.
The second is Steerpike, a ruthlessly ambitious kitchen boy, who is the driving force for the plot of Titus Groan!. His entry into Gormenghast society, at the same time as Lord Titus is born, introduces a steady rate of change into a stagnant world!.

Plot summary
The second book follows the story of Titus from the age of seven to seventeen!. As the novel opens Titus, as the 77th earl and lord of Gormenghast, dreads the life of pre-ordained ritual that stretches before him!. Barquentine as Master of Ritual, and Steerpike his apprentice, are seen by Titus as the embodiment of all he wants to rebel against!.

http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Titus_Alone
Plot summary
The story follows Titus' journey in the world outside Gormenghast Castle, having left his home at the end of the second book!.
Finding himself lost, he suddenly discovers exactly how outdated his home really was, as he stumbles into a city of strange technological marvels, of shimmering metal and glass buildings, whose inhabitants travel by motorcar and airplane — and yet which also houses an entire culture of outcasts beneath the city itself in the "Under-River"!. The book also includes themes more usual to dystopian science fiction, such as marked inequality of wealth and involuntary euthanasia, and in many ways anticipates the steampunk genre!.
