Question: Would my chances of being publish improve if!.!.!.!.!.!?
I have short stories already published in a magazine or online!? I just want to get my name out there for now!. If published online or in a magazine could i take the short story and combine it with other short stories for a novel in the future!? or do the magazines have all the rights to the story!? Do publishing companies frown on having a story that was already "out-there" submitted for publishing in a book of other short stories i'm working on!?

I have several short stories set in a fantasy world (with fantasy creatures/beings such as werewolves, centaurs, and dwarves)!. But these are kind of a setting for a very large story i plan on writing in the future (I already have lots of notes, outline, characters, setting planned out)!.

I'm not quite sure what to do at the moment!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'd agree with Maryn's answer!. Most magazines only require the rights to a story for a limited time, that info is usually available in the submission-guidelines!. Once the period of time is over, you can do whatever you want with the story (including reprinting it)!.

Having had works published should definitely improve your chaces, at least compared to people who'venot had anything published anywhere!. Some magazines do carry clout, but it mentioning even the smaller ones should not hurt!.

I can't help but plug www!.fantasy-writers!.org, which a friend of mine (who also writes fantasy-stories) seems to really like!. The people on the forums there might be able to give you further advice!.

If you publish short fiction in print at a paying publication (as opposed to one that pays only in copies), especially the best paying publication in your genre, that ups your chances of novel publication a little!. Ezines, not so much!.

When you sell a short story to a magazine, they're buying certain rights only, usually the right to be the first North American publisher of that story!. You can reuse the work in a novel, I believe, but you may want to modify or expand on it, adding detail the short story could not accommodate and did not need to work as a stand-alone!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
