James Stanier Clarke, the Royal Librarian, conveyed to Jane Austen the Prince Regent's message that she had permission to dedicate her next book to him!. In other words, the Prince Regent basically gave her a royal command!. Therefore, Emma was dedicated to him - even though Jane Austen despised the rather profligate Prince Regent!. In 1802 Harris Bigg-Wither proposed to Jane Austen and she accepted him!. The next day, she took back her acceptance!. See http://www!.jasa!.net!.au/japeople/biggwith!.!.!.

There was the puppy love between Jane Austen and Tom Lefroy!. It wasn't nearly what the movie made it out to be, but it was significant in her life, to an extent!. See http://www!.jasa!.net!.au/japeople/tomlefro!.!.!.

For more information, I would recommend you read Memoir of Jane Austen by James Edward Austen-Leigh, a nephew of Jane Austen!. You can read it online at http://www!.gutenberg!.org/etext/17797 Gutenberg!.

There is also Jane Austen, Her Life and Letters: A Family Record by Richard Arthur Austen-Leigh and William Austen-Leigh!. Check http://www!.gutenberg!.org/etext/22536

Jane Austen wrote stories to entertain her family!. In reading several biographies about her, I found that she would write her novels in between visits!. When someone would come to visit, she would shove her work under a blotter (or stash it away)!.

I hope this helps!.

***Edit: Jane Austen's Aunt Jane was put into prison for shoplifting!. She was eventually acquitted of the charge!. See http://www!.jasa!.net!.au/japeople/leighper!.!.!.

Eliza de Feuillide - Jane's cousin whose second husband was Jane's favorite brother, Henry - was married to a man who was executed in France (by the guillotine)!. She escaped with her own life and her son!. See http://www!.jasa!.net!.au/books/lefaye2!.htmWww@QuestionHome@Com

If the movie Becoming Jane is in the least bit dependable, she used to cut out words she didn't like in her writing!. There was no backspace back then, you know!. Imagine how delighted she'd be if she saw a word processor!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
