Question: La Cantatrice Chauve by Eugene Ionesco!? Opinions, please!?
I've just finished reading it, and I'm a bit confused by it!.

I understood most of the play but it got a bit difficult to follow towards the end of it!. I wanted to get some opinions from some other people regarding:

The message of the play!?
The ending!? It all got a bit bizarre for me!
The point of Le Pompier and Mary!? And what is the meaning of all the strange anecdotes they tell!?

And pretty much, what do you think of the play!?

ThanksWww@QuestionHome@Com

The play is part of the Theatre of the Absurd movement!. Ionesco wrote it while he was trying to learn English!. During the process he learnt many things which he already knew but had never really taken into consideration, eg The ceiling is up and the floor is down!. I t focuses on the absurdity of language, how we can be speaking but not really sayng anything!. This makes us loose our identity, we become indistinguishable from others!. This can be seen in how the Smiths seemingly do not recognise each other!. It satarises the use of polite small talk in middle class society, how everyone speaks with nothing to say!.
It is a while since I studied the play, and it is hard to follow!. The point of this type of play is that the audience needs to concentrate and question what is happening, not just sit back and be entertained!. The play can be linked to Ionesco's other play, Rhinoceros, where this loss of individuality is seen to be a contributory factor in people succombing to Fascism!. It challenges the audience to think about the relevance of what is being said, not just sitting back and nodding in agreementWww@QuestionHome@Com
