The most prevalent theme in OMAM is the theme of loneliness!. The migrant workers led lonely lives; they usually traveled alone and never stayed in one place long enough to develop and real relationships!. George and Lennie stood out because they traveled together and were best friends!. Perhaps George agreed to take Lennie with him to alleviate his loneliness in the first place, but both George and Lennie were still lonely despite each other's company!. George could not really talk and relate to Lennie because of his mental handicap, and Lennie was an outcast who was tormented because of his handicap!. Lennie couldn't communicate his true thoughts and feelings because he lived life largely in his own mind!.

George and Lennie were not the only lonely people in the book!. Almost every character exemplifies this theme in some way!. Curley's wife is lonely because Curley never pays attention to her in a positive way; she dreamt of becoming an actress, but she instead just married the first man who came her way for fear of being lonely forever!. She was the only female on the farm, and the farmhands are often mean to her or refuse to speak to her because they are afraid of Curley's short temper!.

Crooks was lonely because he was the only black man on the farm!. He wasn't allowed in the same bunkhouse as the white workers, and he was discriminated against and beaten almost daily!. He had no one to talk to, which he makes clear in the scene with Lennie in his room makes obvious!. Instead he merely had to live in isolation from the others and go to his room with merely his books for company!. He had no hope of a better life or situation, and he had no other option but to merely be lonely because of the color of his skin!.

Candy was lonely because he was older than the other workers and his physical handicap made him feel almost useless!. He spent all day on the farm alone with only his dog for company!. He had owned the dog since it was a puppy, and it was his best friend!. He had no one else to talk to or that cared about him in the world besides his dog!. This is why when Carlson shot his dog, he was broken-hearted, and this is why he is so eager to help George and Lennie with their plan to buy their own farm!. He longed for company and to be needed, and he knew if he went with them that he would be useful and have a chance at real happiness!.

At the end of the novella, when George kills Lennie, he is devastated not because he did the wrong thing (because he did the right thing) but because he knew how lonely he was going to be for the rest of his life without Lennie!. As annoyed as he was with Lennie and though he often complained about how easy his life would be without him in it, George loved him and knew that life would NOT be as fulfilling without anyone to share it with!.
