Question: Does anyone remember Gamebooks!? Where you had to choose what the charactors would do, yourself!?
In the 80's, I used to love these books!. You would generally find that you were put in a situation, and had a number of options of what you think you should do!. Sometimes, you won, sometimes you died! They were great! Does anyone remember them!? I suppose with video games they have died out now!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The original series was called Choose Your Own Adventure, but there were lots of others who copied the basic idea!. I remember we had one at school which included picture puzzles and so on as well (you had to solve a mystery)!. They were soooo random though - You turn left!? OK, you fall into a pit and die!. The End!. But I liked them because they were so different from anything else that had been around up until then!.

My favourites were the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, in particular Warlock of Firetop Mountain, Citadel of Chaos and City of Thieves!. They were the ones where you used a simple dice mechanic to fight monsters!. These got me interested in Dungeons and Dragons, which was massively popular at the time - better than the books because instead of a choice of two or three options you could do anything you wanted, and adding other people to the mix gives a better creative result anyway!.

These days the Choose Your Own Adventure books still show up from time to time in charity shops but I don't think they are still being published!. The puzzle-based books are going strong - the last one I saw was a Scooby Doo one which my nephew had, which included mazes and spot-the-difference puzzles and so on!. I'm not sure how much actual choice there is over the endings in a narrative sense though, I got the feeling it was more like a story being linked together with games!. Interactive, yes, but no decisions as such!.

Dungeons and Dragons is still around, it's on the fourth edition now!. If you liked the roleplaying aspect it might be worth having a look around your local gaming store and giving it a try if you have some like-minded friends or can find a local group who are OK with beginners!. Most groups are adults, not kids!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm only 14, and I LOVED those books! I had two that I got from those book sales that they do in school, and I used them so much that I know which options kill you and which ones are the ones that win!. :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

yeah, i remember those!. it would be like two or three books in one if you kept changing your choices!. once in a while you can still find them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
