ermm, i need more background info since i dont know how the story goes but im guessing

if there was a "loss", then it will be ironic that the "grain grew ripe," meaning a good harvest and not a loss!.

I'd say it's ironic because the crop grew abundantly and healthily, not reflecting the loss of Kuti (Sorry, what's that!? Is it a person!?)!.

The crop grew healthily because it was "indifferent" and obviously didn't understand the human loss, being cheerful and healthy and oblivious!. It works backwards and ironically, creating bitterness and resent because of the contrast!.
