Because of his sin and his guilty conscious, Dimmesdale's health fails and he dies!. Because of her sin, Hester is ostracized by society!. Because she is the product of sin and her father will not acknowledge her, Pearl is not normal--she is described as sprite or fairy like!. Pearl is a living symbol of her parents' sin!. She seems unable to be normal until Dimmesdale stands on the platform with her and her mother, taking responsibility for his sin!.

Sin affects others as well!. Chillingworth changed when he found Hester had betrayed their wedding vows, focusing himself on exacting revenge on the man who wronged him!.
