1!. That is a sizeable amount for that particular period of time!. Link that may help you understand this: http://janeaustensworld!.wordpress!.com/20!.!.!.
2!. That is a figure of speech!. It means she could love any man who would agree to marry her even if he only made 50 a year!.

Bingley is wotrth about £130,000 these days - not bad for someone in his twenties!. He has to rent Netherfield, of course and staff it - but domestic s were cheap enough!.
Darcy is more like a third of a million -and of course he owns Pemberley - and the farm land at that time would generate most of his income!.
Probably an allowance of £50!.00 as a dowry (hypothetical as Mr Bennet has no money to speak of)Www@QuestionHome@Com
According to this site
http://www!.nationalarchives!.gov!.uk/curre!.!.!.
Mr Bingley's £5,000 pa would be worth £169,800 today!. (I've used the year 1810!.)
When a girl married in those days, her father would provide her with a dowry, a payment or land, etc, that would go to her husband!. A girl with a big dowry would be courted by a lot of men, while a poorer girl with little money would have a much lesser choice!. However, if you had a big dowry, you'd have to watch out for fortune hunters!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
I found an inflation calculator but it only from 1900 onwards!. So, were it 100 years later it would be worth £442100 (times that by two for dollars)!. So bear in mind it would be worth even more in the early 1800s when the book was set!Www@QuestionHome@Com
I've never read it but for the second part I think it is traditional that the daughter's parents pay her husband some money for looking after her!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
