I could never define the “irony” in spite of being able to understand and use it correctly!. I guess that this is also a definition of the word!.

Irony in Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is mainly concerned with Darcy and Elizabeth!. Darcy convinces his own fiend Bingley not to marry a Bennet and rejects El at the first meeting!. Then he himself falls in love with this Bennet daughter and pops the question to her!. Class, decorum, status- all is forgotten!. El herself despises this man to the core of her heart in the beginning but she too falls for him!. It is also ironic that Darcy ultimately has to help Wickham out in the end!. And then Mrs!. Bennet should hate Darcy when it is he who has saved Lydia from trouble!.

Lastly, you should ask yourself this: Austen satirizes class snobbery and social aspirations through Mrs!. Bennet and the Bingley sisters!. But almost all the marriages in the book, apart from the Wickhams, are economically advantageous marriages for the women!. Eli herself admires Pemberley so much she feels a slight twinge of regret for refusing Darcy!. Wealth and social status ultimately win in the end!. Is not that ironic!?
