My first books were also a collection of childrens stories/fairy tales written by Hans Christian Andersen; The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Snow Queen, The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, The Little Match Girl, The Ugly Duckling and The Red Shoes!.

After that I remember reading a series 'Piggly Wiggly' comics!. This Piggly Wiggly had nothing to do with the American chain of grocery stores, but was a story about a family of foxes or wolves (I think), and the main characters name was Piggly Wiggly!. I just tried to Google it, and I had no luck finding anything regarding these comics!. They were my Fathers comic books when he was a child, so they are more than likely from the 1930's!.

This 'Little Hiawatha' book, and other 'Little Golden Books' were also favorites of mine:

Ignoring picture books when I was a tiddler and John and Janet stereotypical "first readers" when I was a toddler, the first work of literature I came across was Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, when I was 7, which is quite long, so it must have gripped my imagination!. I had borrowed it from a library for the school holidays and it had to be back in a fortnight, so I read fast and gobbled it all up!.

I suppose the semi-autobiographical writing style and the fact that Pip was seven at the start of the book, my age at the time, gave me an easy entry point into his world!.

I remember the obviously emotive and unusual bits, mad Miss Havisham, stalking the house, the escaped convict Magwitch being helped by Pip out on the moors and Pip's unreciprocated and unrequited feelings for the lovely but cold and distant heroine, Estella!.

None of these adventures were part of my experience as an only child in a suburban solidly petty-bourgeois household!. One simply did not meet mad recluses and starving escaped convicts in my sanitised, tidy-your-bedroom, brush-your-teeth and don't-answer-back world!. They didn't get a look in!. I had to go "through the looking glass" of literature to enter theirs!.

The fact that it was set in a different time (it covers the years 1812-1840) which I knew nothing about, simply added to the allure!. I vowed I would become a writer and create an imaginary world for others to enter!. And, twelve years later, I did!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
