I have a feeling that, had he survived Voldemort's defeat, he may have gone on to train as an Auror!. I don't think he was living off his inheritance out of laziness - more out of a desire to do all that he could against Voldemort, which suggests that he might have wanted to become an Auror at some point!. He may well have known Mr!. Weasley, although I doubt he knew him well!. They're both Pureblood, so they're probably distantly related, but I don't know if that means they ever had much to do with each other!. Arthur's much too old to have been at school with James (by the time James died, all of the Weasley children had been born), and in one of the books (possibly OOP), Remus talks about how Molly wasn't in the Order last time - which suggests to me that Arthur wasn't, either, because they were married by that time, and I would have thought they'd do stuff like that together!. So the Weasleys were probably friends and well-wishers of the Order, but they probably didn't want to get involved because they had so many small children to look after!. So James wouldn't have really known Arthur through the Order!. And, based on that, they might not have really crossed each other's paths, especially in the few years leading up to James' death!. James would have been busy, working for the Order, getting married, having Harry!. And Arthur would presumably have been working hard at the ministry, trying to provide for his ever-growing family!. The kind of money that Rowling suggests James' family had might suggest that they - his parents, perhaps - had something to do with the Ministry!. If so, they would have been high-fliers - Department Heads, perhaps!. It's possible that one or both of James' parents worked with Arthur when he was just a young man who'd only recently started at the Ministry!. They may have come home talking about "young Weasley" - they may even have invited him for dinner once or twice!. Perhaps James was the teenager at the dinner table who resented having to put on a tie to meet his parents' colleague, and would much rather have been throwing Dungbombs at someone!. Perhaps Arthur was the awkward guest - close enough to James' age to know what he was thinking, but too much older for him to seem anything but a nuisance to James!. I think the chances are high that James and Arthur would know of each other's existence!. They may have met a couple of times, they may have known each other to say hello to!. They died of wizarding illnesses and left James their fortune!. He therefore didn't need a good paying job and when he left Hogwarts he worked for the Order of the Phoenix full time - hence comes up his defying Voldemort 3 times within a few years of his leaving school!. It never reached the heights that the second war reached, because the Ministry was never infiltrated to that extend but it was a very bad time, the same disappearances, the same deaths!. So that's what they did, they left school!. James has gold, enough to support Sirius and Lily!. So I suppose they lived foff a private income!.
