Yeah, I do!. Not in the extreme!.!.like I don't go and seek out a person who is just like one of my characters or something and then randomly get to know them!. I do however try and base my characters on real experiences or on aspects of my own character so that I can understand them better!.
For the experiences, I am writing a fantasy novel which inevitably involves a lot of swordplay!. So yesterday I joined the fencing club at my university and already I feel much more able to write a scene involving sword fighting! It's a great experience and I've also found a new hobby from it!.
I think it's a good idea to get a feel for the places you're writing about in particular!. When I write (that is, in an invented setting) I use places based on real life areas I know!. If I haven't been to a place like that then I try and go to one (e!.g!. I had never been to a lake that would quite fit into a description I wanted in my book so last time I was on holiday in Ireland I went lake-searching and found the perfect one)!.
Obviously it's personal preference!. I think it's also about what kind of book you are writing!. If it's a very internal one that is set in a place/time/with characters just like everything you know then it's probably not necessary!.
I do think it's true that you should 'write what you know', though, and if that involves having to 'know' more things, then it can be great to have fun doing that!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, I do!.

In the course of my writing and character designing, I realized that the human mind can be a very complicated and interesting subject!. Everyone in the world is different in terms of behaviour, and as I place quite a lot of emphasis on reality in my writing, I prefer variety in my characters!. Therefore, to a certain extent, it is necessary to meet new people and gain experiences so as to create different and intriguing characters!.

also, by gaining more experiences and meeting new people, I can see the world from different points of view and it benefits me in my writing as I can present these new-found concepts and ideas!. Putting my writing aside, these new-found concepts may also change the way I personally look at the world, and generate new ideas and questions in my own mind!.

It's simply amazing what you can learn from your surrounding and from the people around you, even the people you don't know!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think I try to keep an open mind!. As a writer I find myself much more willing to keep my opinions to myself in conversation so I can hear others more clearly!. I think I have become a better listener!.

I dont know if I go out and meet people on purpose!. I'm a friendly person but not very open so its difficult for me to get to really know new people!. Instead I focus on the people I already have in my life!. I really listen to them!.

As for new things- not for my writing but for my own memories!. I think most of my stories come from my backyard but I travel for the adventure!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't discriminate against others that do, because I can understand that, but I feel as though everything I need to know to become a good writer is already in my head!. (I know, a bit narcissistic!.) All it takes is motivation and time on my part, and everything else, I believe, will come naturally!.
