Harry is able to see the Thestrals at the beginning of Order of the Phoenix!. It is later explained that you can see them after you have seen death!. Harry had seen the death of his mother and possibly his father before he saw Cedric Diggory die, so why didn't he see the Thestrals before!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ok, this same question thing arose with other HP fans!. I remember seeing it on an HP fan site!.

JKR's response: You can't see them until the death "sinks in!."

I had actually been wondering that to!. jk rownling doesn't seem like the kind of person to leave that kind of hole!. he didn't see his dad die because his mom took him upstaires before voldemort killed him!. In the movie it seemed like he saw his mom die and in the book vodemort says that harry looked as though waiting for his mom to pop back up and his dad to be the one under the cloak so it does seem like he would have seen her die doesn't it!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Not entirely sure about this but if you remember, Harry didn't actually know how his parent's died until he was told at 11 years old and his memories of it didn't return until the third year because of the dementors!. It doesn't mention in the books what he saw or where he was positioned when they died, that is only portrayed in the movies!. Not really an answer but no one except JK knows for sure :) Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think Harry actually saw his parents die, per say!. He was in their presence when they died, but I don't think he saw 'the light leave their eyes'!. His mother had tried to run away, so he did not see his father dying!. It is possible that Lily pushed Harry away from herself when Voldemort struck, so he would only have seen the flash of green light and heard the scream - he wouldn't have actually seen her dying!.
But then again, I may be wrong!

It had to 'sink in'!. Harry was very young when his parents were killed!. I found this: J!.K!. Rowling stressed that in order for someone to see thestrals, one not only has to witness death directly, but that person has to accept and understand death, and that the person will never be among the living again!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Insanegenius is right; JKR said that the death has to sink in before a person could see the thestrals!. He was, after all, only a year old when his parents were killed!. He wouldn't understand what he'd seen happen to them!. When Cedric died, Harry felt the full blow of it!. It was horrible!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

if you read the 7th book, then you can see into voldemorts mind on the night where harry's parents were killed, james tells lily to run and is killed in a seperate room, lily blocks the doorway to harry (who is laying in his bed), and is not in view when killed!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

JKR herself said that Harry did not remember (or see, or something like that) his parent's die!. And with Cedric, you can't see thestrals until the death "sinks in!." Harry had to accept the death of Cedric before he could see thestrals!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Harry was only a baby when his parents were murdered - so he cant remember them dying whereas cedric was killed in front of harry so he can remember that - so maybe you can only see thestrals when you see and remember death!.

He was probably to small to remember!. Maybe its if you seen and conciously is aware of death!. You have to know and probably have a concious mine about the person dying to see it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
