I've noticed this trend as well!. It happened when Harry Potter came out and was so successful!. Suddenly there were all kinds of books about "magic"!. Then when Twilight became so successful it started over with vampires and werewolves!.

I think part of it is the publishing companies saying "Look!. They're hitting it big with books about ____!. Lets put out some books like that and make money too!."

It's not like there weren't book like these before!. I mean I've been reading books about vampires and wizards for years, but they are so much easier to find now!. When it's the "IN" thing!. !. !. !. !. !.Www@QuestionHome@Com

And yet, teens still refuse to read Dracula!. I wonder why!. It's got twice the action/mystery/suspense than the drivel that is Twilight!.
The only good thing about the Harry Potter craze was that Diana Wynne Jones's books got reprinted!.
I think there is that upwards trend because many of today's teenagers can't sit still just reading a book with only human characters!. Let's use Agatha Christie for an example!. She's famous, but how can we be sure we'll be entertained throughout the whole thing!? In fact, her beginnings are quite slow!. Teens might put her books down, even, after fifty pages because, to them, 'nothing is happening'!.
On the other hand, the supernatural is mysterious and dangerous!. A teen is guaranteed some action in a supernatural book!. That is why they are more willing to pick it up!.
This, although, only applies to teens who hardly ever read!. This trend doesn't apply to those who read a lot!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

my opinion of this trend is that twilight rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and that scott westerfeild is awesome(i didnt like his vamps book though)

p!.s!. if adults/teens are reading books thats always a good thing!.!.!.they might read a really good book about vampires, witches, werewolves, etc and start reading about other stuff!.!.!.theyll open up their minds to new ideas!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It started because now teenagers actually read!.!.!.
and they all love action/adventure!.!.!. and of course romance!.
With Narnia and Lord of the Rings, mythological creatures became the fashion!.!.!.!.

so let's mix mythological creatures+action+romance= a bestseller
