Question: Why is the book 1984 by george orwell no longer read in the school systems!?
Although famous literature that was read years ago in school is still read today, how come 1984 is no longer allowed in the curriculum!? Has anybody read this book, or farm animals!? What is your opinion!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Orwell's works often fall in and out of political fashion!. Many of his peers on the political left originally castigated him for publishing "1984" and especially "Animal Farm" (both of which are blistering and thinly veiled critiques of the Soviet Union's slide into brutal totalitarianism) primarily because they thought he was betraying their communist sympathies and either didn't want to believe, or willfully ignored the fact that their ideology was causing one of the greatest catastrophes ever committed against humanity!.

And while he was no fan of unfettered capitalism (he was a socialist for awhile), he stood by his convictions and history has unequivocally vindicated him!.

However, this has never sat quite well with with certain intellectuals who still to this day espouse marxist ideals (many of whom instruct and influence young teachers and administrators who select the reading lists and curriculums in our schools)!. Thus the reluctance of some of them to include him as required reading!.

Not to fear, though; the power of his writing, and the prescience of his message will resonate as long as their are governments and leaders more intent on oppressing their own people than providing sound leadership!. His detractors are well aware that to ban him outright would be considered, in a word, Orwellian!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You've confused two of Orwells books!. 1984 is not about animals that is Animal Farm!. Given the number of questions I see related to Animal Farm on this forum it is still very much in the school curriculum!.

1984 is a bit more advanced and even years ago It wasn't required reading in HS English!. Perhaps the reason it isn't taught as much today is that it is a bit too relevant to our lives today!. It might be that schools stopped teaching it because it brought up too many comparisons to life today for it to be comfortable for students to read!. The parallels to life in America are just a little too real!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm in Singapore, and even though we don't do it as a text it was on our reading list once for an English assignment!. I don't think it's dead!. Animal Farm is being done as a literature text though, in the secondary one (I think that's like grade 7) classes!. These texts are all about the government and oppression and stuff, but I don't think they are in any way ban-able, unless it's some authoritarian regime that's deciding!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My sophomore English class read both of those books two years ago, so surely it hasn't been banned from the curriculum!? At least "Animal Farm" for sure wasn't; it's an anti-communism book, and I can't imagine our country ever expressing anything remotely close to disapproval for it, despite our supposed equality and rights to believe what we want to!.

The only controversial aspect of 1984 that I can think of is the figure of Big Brother, since it is obviously alluding to the USA and its political corruption and unsound methods!. It is a work highly critical of governments and contemporary American ideals in general!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My school last year read that book!. My class however didn't; we read Brave New World instead, but I did read 1984 for something else we had to do for the class!. (A reading assignment we would do on our own, and then one on one with the teacher explained what happened on the next page as she read a page to the person!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com
