I'm going to go out on a limb and say about !.1% had to to 99!.9% want to!. I usually read one novel a day, and I haven't been made to read a specific book in about 16 years!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The only book I can remember reading because I had to, which I wouldn't have read because I wanted to, was "The Red Badge of Courage" by Stephen Crane!.

I don't know how many books I've read because I wanted to!. Hundreds, maybe thousands!. I love reading!. Paradise is a good book, a comfortable place to kick back and relax, and unlimited time with no interruptions to read!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

i lost track!. if we are talking about fiction and more of literature:

books i've read because i have to: 5 ( because of a pre requisite in school and there's a per chapter quiz!.!.!.2 books required, i just have someone tell me the story)

books i've read because i want to: 1 (only little prince someone gave to me!.!.!.not counting the pocket books) i'm a writer and i try not to be influenced by other authors' style of writing!.

so the ration i guess is 5:1!.

talk about a memory challenge!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Realistically, I think more books I've read were mandatory!.

When I was in middle school and the first part of high school, I had plenty of time to read!.!.!.I polished off redwall books, frank herbert's dune books, and a ton of other titles on a weekly/monthly basis!. Nowadays, I have so much to read from textbooks and required literature, that a little bit of the fun has been taken out of reading!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Had to!? Maybe 25-30!. Wanted to!. Well, I started saving them after a couple of years - wish I would have started sooner!. I have over 4000 books in my collection - all read because I wanted to!.

After I started reading a lot, I also started writing the authors!. Somewhere (lost in my last move) I have several letters each from Asimov, Heinlein (only 1 from him), Piers Anthony, Warren Murphy and others!. Murphy actually send my 50 autographed books as a birthday present!

The point is, reading can be wnjoyable in more ways than one!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Even the books that I "had" to read for school, I still wanted to read!. If we had a choice between two books for book reports and such, I would read them both!. So, 100 % are books I wanted to read!.

I'm a book-aholic I think!. :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Outside of school and job requirements, all the books I have read was by choice!. Since I am clueless as to the exact number of books I have read, my guess would be one in fifty was mandatory!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have read SO MANY books on my own that it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to know exactly how many!.!.!.but I know that it's definitely WAY WAY more than what I have had to read!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with Always Ariana!. I always want to read, I've never been forced to!.

But sometimes I don't like reading textbooks!. I'm not sure if that counts!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

its probably 10:1 Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm a prolific reader, so I'd put it at 100 to 1 (wanted to required)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Had to - maybe ten!?
Wanted to - hundreds!.

That's the best guess I can make, anyways!. =)Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have no idea!. All I know is majority of the books I read is from free will!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

i only read old friends, books i keep coming back to!. never read fictionWww@QuestionHome@Com
