Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Yes ~ Cather in the Rye is a fantastic book!. I read it in high school and did not enjoy it as we picked apart the book!. I read it on my own, loved it and have gone back and read it several times since; awesome!!

The Chrysalids by John Wyndham is also an excellent book that I read in high school and re-read recently; enjoyed it even more the 2nd time!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Jane Austen is the best classical writer, in my mind!. Her books are Pride & Prejudice (my fave), Sense & Sensibility, Emma, Mansfield Park, Persuasion, and Northanger Abbey!.
Mark Twain books could work for you, like Huck Finn!. Tom Sawyer,
Moby Dick, King Solomon's Mines, Paradise Lost are all classics!.

Utopia by Thomas Moore was amazing, on a different kind of society!. True classic!.

If you want old-as-the-hills classic, try Homer's The Iliad!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

JANE EYRE by Charlotte Bronte: I wrote a book report on this in grade 9 even though I was in the "lower level" English class!. Because I got an A I was "promoted" to advanced English!.!.!.you can easily impress your teacher with this book like I did!. Very good read!.

If you want something easy to read I'd go for anything by Jane Austen or Alexander Dumas!.
For something more challenging try Germinal by Zola or The Idiot by Dostoevsky!.
