Question: What is the name of the technique where an author deceives the reader!?
I'm writing an essay comparing Christopher Priest's novel, The Prestige, with Neil Burger's film, The Illusionist!. Both authors use a technique in which they exclude various details specific to discovering a mystery that the text is based around, yet they reveal minor details using foreshadowing!. For example, Priest writes journal entries from the perspective of one man named Borden, but Borden frequently converses with himself within these journal entries!. It is later discovered by the reader that this is foreshadowing to the fact that Borden is in fact two people, pretending to be one person!. It is difficult to explain but if anybody knows the name of this technique or has any suggestions as to what I should include in my essay, it would be greatly appreciated!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Unreliable narrator!? I think that only works if the story's first person though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The technique could be misdirection; hinting to the reader and allowing (or even guiding) them to jump to false conclusions which may persist for a few lines or for the rest of the book with a denouement at the end!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
