Question: Have you ever written a story you were proud of, and, in the same year, someone famous made something similar!?
I remember I made a book, and I was super proud of it, but in the same year, a movie that was somewhat like it came out, and I was mad!. I'm thinking about becoming an author, but I get the feeling all my ideas have already been taken!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Oh my God, I know the feeling but for me it happened it reverse!. I once wrote the first five chapters of a fantasy novel about a dwarf-like character who lived in a kingdom ruled by a dark Queen and stuff like that and then I read the Hobbit by J!.R!.R Tolkien and they were 70% similar!. I hated that!. I'd invented something that was already invented!.

Try and come up with a story that's really original!.
Set it in the future!.!.!.
write about a time traveller stuck in the past trying to get help by leaving messages for people in the future!.!.!.!.
Write about the end of the world!.!.!.!.
An 'Alice in Wonderland' style story!.!.!.!.

Unfortunately there's no way you can stop similar works coming out!. They just beat you to it!. Aim for originality!.

I am currently writing a fantasy novel myself in the same style as 'The Chronicles of Narnia'!. But I'm aiming for a different way of how the story "moves" and different motivations in the story!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ideas are a dime a dozen!. They say there are only 20 original plots and everything is some kind of derivation of one of them!.

Don't worry about similar plots!. What makes a story great is having "real" characters people care about, issues in the story that matter to readers, and your style of writing!. I don't mean you have to be a Shakespeare or a Marilynne Robinson, but study the craft, learn the techniques, and put your whole heart into the work!.
