Question: What does "de Bergerac" mean!?
I know this makes me a pretty severe idiot, but I started reading the play Cyrano de Bergerac a couple of days ago!.!.!. and this morning I realized that I have no idea what "de Bergerac" means!. I do not care if you want to scoff at me so long as you try to answer the question =]

I believe it just means, Cyrano of Bergerac, Bergerac being a place in France!.

Or, it's just his last name! Last names in the "old days" typically were used to describe where a person came from!.

So, Cyrano from Bergerac!. However this doesn't mean Cyrano himself came from Bergerac if the name had been passed down from father to son!.

Cyrano de Bergerac was actually born in Paris!. But the original "Bergerac" could have hailed from that area!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm pretty sure my 12th grade English teacher said it's just "of Bergerac" meaning where he came from!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
