Dickens first stories were published in "The Monthly Magazine" and using the pen name of "Boz" he also had stories published in the Morning and Evening Chronicles!. These became popular and were published as a book "Sketches by Boz" in 1836!.

The publisher William Hall then commissioned Dickens to write "The Pickwick Papers" in twenty monthly episodes followed by "Oliver Twist" in 1837/8 Nicholas Nickleby in 1838/9 published monthly and the books "The Old Curiosity Shop" (1840/1), "Barnaby Rudge" (1841), "Martin Chuzzlewit" (1843/4) and "A Christmas Carol" (1843)!.
