Question: What is some evidence that the ghosts in Turn of the Screw are real!?

Were there really ghosts or was the governess unbalanced!? Some form of this question has been debated since Henry James wrote the story!.

I don't think there is any definitive evidence that says the ghosts were real!. Granted I read this years ago, but as I recall the governess describes Quint, a man she never met and who was dead before she came there, in detail and accurately!. It's possible she got hints as to his description through others, but that could be a point in favor of the ghosts being real!.

Another thing that may point to the ghosts being real is the fact that the governess also describes the former governess accurately!. She had never met her, either!.

The fact that Quint and the former governess had some kind of relationship was also unknown to the governess!. Seeing the two of them as ghosts, ostensibly working together, suggests the possibility that she really is seeing ghosts!. How could she have known about their relationship!?

In the final analysis, however, I was as unsure about the ghosts versus disturbed governess after reading the book as I was before!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
