It's explained towards the end of the book!. When Holden's sister asks him what he truly wants to be he talks about how he wants to catch children if they should ever fall over while playing in the rye (rye field)!. It is based off of a poem!. The title is simple!. Holden wants to catch children from being corrupted by society!. He wants to be the catcher of children from decaying through age and time!. Symbolically the rye field would be the society and the catcher would mean Holden!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
