Question: Which mythical stories/themes do you like!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
I am obsessed with Greek mythology! Always have been!. It really annoys me when people use the Roman names when they stole them from Greece!. Especially the Hercules thing!. HERACLES!. Damn you, Disney, you got every other name right in that movie!

I like other mythologies too; Norse, Celtic, Japanese, etc!. I think Egyptian's my second favourite after Greek!.

Apart from that I really like ghost and horror stories, although good ones are hard to find!. Supernatural monsters and lots of bloodshed!. Yum!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I enjoy mythology immensely (Yeah, Greek Mythology rocks!. My fave story is Cupid and Psyche - the love arrow shooter finally falls in love himself) and I also like fantasy and contemporary fantasy as long as it isn't Twilight or Vampire Kisses!. Both those series make me puke!.
LuthienT
I like:
Greek Mythology (and Roman Mythology, since they're basically the same)
Arthurian Mythology
LOTR Mythology
Norse Mythology
and basically anything fantastical!. Orcs, mermaids, fairies, gnomes, elves, vampires (real ones, not the stupid sparkly fairies) and anything mythological!. Bring it on!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Depends upon which sort of mythical stories you are thinking of!. Historical - I would probably say that I am interested in Celtic!.

Irish stories - e!.g!. The Ulster heroes (Band of The Red Hand), help to illuminate some of the warrior/honour codes followed by Celts!.

Other stories from North West Europe are also of interest and point to the lives and beliefs of these talented people!.

The legends of Arthur, originally written by the French, are probably based upon older stories and legends!. Even so, this is quite interesting in its own right!.

In addition to this, I am also interested in the early beliefs of the Sumerian peoples!. It is interesting to note that most cultures seem to believe in a flood!. It is also quite interesting to compare the early Lords and Ladies to latter religious beliefs!. I find Il quite interesting!.

Following on from this and leaning towards fantasy, Gilgamesh is a good read!. The Iliad is fine, as long as you don't mind wading through the troop listings!. Mahabharata is also a great read, although I think that the bad guy should have one!.

As for real fantasy stories!? Anything by David Gemmel is always good for a read!. Terry Pratchett is good for a laugh!.

The Dark Tower by Stephen King
The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind
Harry Potter
The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings
Ingo series by Helen Dunmore
Swimming with the fishes by MaryJanice Davidson

Greek mythology is my thing really - if you can find a copy try Roberto Calasso's The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony - it's not for the novice but has a really dazzling range of material!. I've read some Celtic mythology and found it rather dreamy and strange - oddly compelling though!. I'd like to know more about Norse mythology - if anyone out there knows a good beginner's guide please post details!

BTW - I don't think it's entirely fair to say that the Romans just copied the Greeks - most cultures and religions from Hinduism to Voodoo have similar archetypes in their pantheon - the sky-father, earth-mother, love goddess, war god etc!. The Greeks had colonised Italy long before Rome developed so Roman religious belief was probably shaped as much by Greek influences as by Etruscan!. The Romans believed they were descended from Trojan refugees and according to Homer Troy shared a religious culture with Greece - Romans may have considered it their birthright but adapted names that meant something in Latin rather than 'foreign-sounding' Greek names!.

You shouldn't knock people for the stories they like!. If Bella likes the Twilight story that's up to her!. You did ask, and she answered!. Don't ask if you don't want to know!.
Personally, I also love Twilight!. I also like Lord of the Rings!. It is not at all a rip off, for goodness sake, it's more original than most books you find nowadays!. You seem to want people to answer you only giving you answers such as Greek Mythology!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
