Recall that the world the boys seemingly have escaped from is at war!. People are innately belligerent and uncivilized, and the boys quickly devolve to the same pattern of behavior!. They form two warring groups which differ in ideology and purpose, and they do not seek compromise but rather Jack's group attempts to dominate the other group!. At novel's close, the island is ablaze and the last vestiges of civilization have disappeared!. The island has become the world in microcosm and the boys have succumbed to the flaws of the adults in the larger world!. What is human nature is innate and inescapable, and it is not good!.
