What are some similarities between "The Power of One" (Bryce Courtenay

Question: What are some similarities between "The Power of One" (Bryce Courtenay) and "The Pearl" (John Steinbeck)!?

I need to compare these books!. So far I have that they both have an odd beginning, a few pages (<10) of happiness, and a murderous ending (TPOO- Peekay kills the judge, TP- The baby's head gets blown off!.)
