Well I sympathize with Elizabeth because the fact she's going through whole mess because her husband couldn't keep his hands to himself and then some little girl blew the affair way out of proportion and was determined to seek revenge!. I sympathize with John but no where near as much as Elizabeth!. The reason they're having tension in the play is because John's cheated before and Elizabeth has very little trust him and is just all around ticked off about the whole situation!. John wants her trust but he know's he can't demand it because he know she has no reason to trust him!. They love each other very much!.!.!.!. but they're both confused by the situation and don't know what to do!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The main tension between John and Elizabeth is that John refuses to accept that he is just going to have to put up with Elizabeth being angry and not trusting him!. Knowing John Proctor as I do (I spend three weeks him every semester), he is really still angry with himself and Elizabeth presence reminds him of his short comings!.

The portion of this scene when John forgets "thou shall not commit adultery" is priceless!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
