Rachael, a lot of the suggestions from the other answers are very good, I just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents!.

Maybe he had a dream growing up that he left to live a more conventional life and he runs into a situation that reminds him of that dream and he turns his life (and his family's) life upside down!?

There are a lot of different ways to go with from the background you've created!. Maybe this is still too broad!? I often find that with writing having some boundaries for my creativity helps to inspire it!. Ask yourself some questions about this guy and his life, don't worry about being "right" or not, just run with them!.

Oh, and trust yourself and have fun with it!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ok, you know what makes really good dramatization!? A fall from grace!. Shakespeare used this a lot and so does Martin Scorsese (director of Aviator, gangs of new york)!. The business man who craves fame and fortune is a perfect set up for a fall from grace!. This is when someone who gains so much power is doomed to fall from his position on top and brings shame and embarrassment upon himself!. This would make interesting reading, create very high stakes and then make him lose it all as the climax and as you lead up to the climax give the audience hints at how much there is to lose for him and hints of his expected downfall!.
Hope this helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He ignores his wife and kids!. But why is he bitter and self absorbed!? Especially bitter!? His wife leaves him and takes the children!. He's on his own!. Now, the best thing to do is to develop the character!. Work out a basic description of him in your mind!. Then, pretend he's sitting across the table from you!. What do you ask him!? What do you talk about!? He wants to unload his troubles, but finds difficulty doing so!. Prompt him!. In this way, you're developing your plot around the main character and it's amazing how a story can unfold in this way!.
Good luck

1!. Something bigger takes hold of his life, whether natural disaster or an illness that cannot be cured - something that forces him to humble himself!.
2!. He wakes up one morning and falls out of bed onto unfamiliar ground !. !. !. he does not know where he is, what day it is and goes on a journey to rediscover himself!.

Give him a task he absolutely must accomplish!.

Then throw as many difficulties in his path as you can!. Make it really, really hard for him to get to what he must do, have, get, or be!. His bitterness will be more charming if he has good reason to be bitter because of all his difficulties!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Not to be rude, but that plot has been used at least a thousand times!.

That was rude, wasn't it!. Sorry!. It's just that, without some creative riffs, that story will just be a cliche, and if the creative riffs are thought up by someone else, it won't be your story!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

How does he look like!?
Does he have a wife!?
Does he have a job!?
Does he have a family!?
Does he have sibilings!?
Ask your self questions about this man!.
What's his name!?
Is he well-liked!?
How do other people view him!?
