I am an antiquarian book collector who has been collecting since the 1970's!. also the late 1800's is a period that I'm familiar with!.

The best site to try to find a book of the same title and author is
www!.abebooks!.com

They have listings from bookstores all over the world!. bookfinder!.com is OK but not quite as good as abebooks!.com

It would have been nice to have listed the title and author of the book in question!. We might have been able to tell you right away!.

The value of an old book depends on 1: The Author!. 2: First Edition or not!. 3:Condition

If the author is not a famous or respected one then it's not worth squat, just because it's old!. There are tons of old books out there!.

First editions are also the most valuable!. Sometimes a book can be worth something if it's extremely rare or an unusual edition!.

That's just the beginning of what makes certain books valuable!. it would take way to long to tell you all of them!.
Just go to abebooks!.com and list the title and author in the search bar, and it will tell you all the copies that are for sale around the world!. look for one that lists the same publishing year!.
Usually in a book of that age, the publishing date will be listed on the Title page underneath the name of the publishing house!.

Then you can compare what's for sale with what you actually have!.

Good Luck
