Question: Who is the greatest living author!?
Now that Solzhenitsyn is dead, this is maybe an easier question to answer!. This question is open to all opinions, even if you say (sigh) the author of Twilight!. My only request is that you at least know what I meant by "now that Solzhenitsyn is dead" when you answer!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hmm!.!.!. Speaking as someone who counts most of her favorite authors as already dead, this question is somewhat unpleasant for me!. Made more so by the fact that most of the answers seem to count Stephanie Meyer and J!.K!. Rowling as the greatest, THE GREATEST, living authors of today!. Excuse me!?!?

Anyways, I won't rant on with that but I'll just note a few of my favorite authors, even though I honestly don't think they hold a candle to the dead ones!.

Ray Bradbury
Philip Roth
Neil Gaiman (kinda, but not really)
Elie Wiesel

uh!.!. See I run into problems with these LIVING ones!.!. :(

I don't think it's fair that you qualify the question with knowing who Solzhenitsyn is - people can be avid readers, read tons of classic and modern literature and still not be familiar with Russian writers or the particular genre Solzhenitsyn wrote!.

I only know who he is because I take advantage of that wonderful learning tool - Google!.

That said - the greatest author I have read who's still alive is Neil Gaiman!.
He is a wonderful wonderful writer who writes in several genres, in several mediums and has such a gift with words he can make anything seem magical and beautiful!. He is a huge inspiration to me when it comes to writing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

All that crossed my mind are no longer living!.!. I honestly can't think of someone I would call the "greatest" living author!. My guilty pleasure was always Cervantes!.

I would like to make a comment on J!.K!. Rowling!. While I don't consider her to be in the caliber of a Nobel Prize winner, I do agree she did something great!. Reading for young children was being replaces by video games, T!.V!. and the internet!. It is wonderful she introduced literature into the lives of so many children and back into the lives of a number of adults also!. Hopefully these children and young adults will be open to exploring other authors and subjects as they get older!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Tim O'Brien

Arguably, of course!. I have several candidates and might well have selected another on a different day!. O'Brien would always be on the shortest of short lists however, and today he takes the crown!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
