Question: What is the average word count in a young/teenage novel!?
I'm writing a novel about horses and riding, aimed at people from 10-16ish!. I've already written my first draft (of the whole book), but it's only 33,000 words!. Is that far too little!? Should I extend my book!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

In fact, an average YA novel is 50-75K!.

Is there a subplot you could enhance that still ties into the main plot!?

An average adult novel ranges from 85K-120K, depending on genre!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That is rather too short!. It would be more of a novella than a novel!.

An average novel tends to be anything from 60-80,000 words!.

But novella's can work and if it's got everything it needs to have in it, don't make it longer just for the sake of it!.

If you feel it doesn't have everything it could in it, of course you could lengthen it if you wanted to!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is up to you!. Teen novels can range in all sorts of word counts depending on the type of book it is!.

I feel the need to point out that 10-16 is a very broad age group to target!. Average ten-year-olds are at a far different reading level, and like far different things, than sixteen-year-olds!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
