I loved it!

It is a most extraordinary mixture of history, alternate history, adventure and magic!. A very adult and literate fantasy novel!. The only things I have read that are anything like Susanna Clarke's book are Mary Gentle's books based loosely around her White Crow and Ash characters!.

The book follows the adventures of the two characters named in the title, the latter being the original tutor of the former in English Magic before they go their separate ways!. But behind everything, lurking in the shadows, stands the mysterious and powerful figure of John Uskglass, The Raven King, who Jonathon Strange wants desperately to meet and Gilbert Norell wants desperately to avoid!.!.!.

Gobsmacking!

I first got this book about five years ago!. I started reading it then, and got stuck after about the first 200 pages!. I started it again about three months ago, and finished it in about a week - and couldn't work out why I'd got stick with it the first time around!. I enjoyed it hugely, and was fascinated by the Raven King!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I read it and did not care for it!. I did enjoy the first 200 pages but felt it then became rather drawn out and boring!. I am currently enjoying The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski and recommend it!. also, Speaks the Nightbird by Robert McCammon was excellent!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I loved it a great deal!. It's the closest I'll get to reading a novel that is written in the style of an old classic like, say, Dickens!. I've never been a fan of classic literature (haven't got the patience!) but I couldn't put this book down!. My mum didn't like it because she has no time for fantasy, magic and mystery!. However, it is one of my favourite books! xWww@QuestionHome@Com

It was very good, but it took me a very long time to read!. The book is so heavy, I couldn't ever take it out of the house - I could only read it in bed (I do most of my reading on the subway)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, it's a really good book!. Very imaginative!.

But it does help if you already like 19th century British fiction, since it is written in that style!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Its pretty good once you get into it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
