War of the Worlds
The Time Machine (downer ending)
The Invisible Man (unlike many IM stories, he's a villain!. This is the original)
Isaac Asimov
I, Robot (you *must* read this - the only "must read" scifi)
Elijah Baley books - http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Elijah_Bale!.!.!. excellent both as scifi *and* as murder mysteries - the best of both worlds (warning: adult content in the 3rd book)
Foundation Series - *the* classic scifi trilogy
Andre Norton - *the* classic female scifi author, most of her books involve "coming of age" and pure scifi adventure

Harry Harrison's The Stainless Steel Rat books were my favorites when I was under 20!. They are kind of old fashioned by today's standards but I still read them and enjoy the humor!.
There are ten books in the series, publishing dates ranging from 1961 to 1999!.
James Bolivar DeGriz, a!.k!.a!. the Stainless Steel Rat, superior con man of the far distant future!.
My favorite is "The Stainless Steel Rat gets Drafted!." And could have taken over the military if he wanted to!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
