Question: Is the idea of quotes at the start copyrighted by Anne Brashares, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants!?
I'm writing a book and I'm putting quotes at the start of chapters, but then I realized, Oh my god, Ann Brashares put quotes at the start of chapters in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and I don't want to commit copyright infringement!. Anyone know a way to find out!? Or if it's copyrighted at all!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Brashares wasn't the first author to start chapters with quotes and nearly every author I can think of has had characters repeating famous quotes, either from the Bible, from Shakespeare, or from historical figures!.

The only thing you have to be sure of is to properly acknowledge the person you are quoting-although I should add an * to that!. Some authors, such as Robert Asprin, have used gag quotes that they attribute to certain people!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

it is a basic book layout theme like having the first letter of a new chapter bigger than the rest of the text!. Other authors indent the new chapter paragraph with a design in a block!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The idea can't be copyrighted, of course, but you need to verify that your quoted material isn't under copyright -- or get clearance, if it is!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

How can someone copyright that!? o!.o

No, it isn't copyrighted!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
