So, while I have never read any of john wyndham's books, I thought I'd answer this because I am long-time fan of the sci-fi genre!.

1984, Brave New World, and Ender's Game have already been mentioned, and I whole-heartedly agree with those who suggested them!.

I would add:

Illium by Dan Simmons
The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury
We by Yevgeny Zamyatin
