The balance of power in this novel shifts very quickly and it is Lolita who is the manipulator!. She is a savvy child and quickly realizes that Humbert is hopelessly in love with her!. She manipulates him, getting her to go where she wants and do what she wants in return for sexual gratification!. The culmination of Lolita's manipulation is when we see the high school aged Lolita with Humbert literally prostrate at her feet begging her for attention!. It is a very complex relationship!.
