Because that's what the book is about!. Elizabeth Bennet's pride, and Darcy's prejudice about dear Lizzy(*not* the other way around)!. The book was originally titled "First Impressions!."

Edit: Just so you know, Lizzy is proud and not prejudiced because it's her pride that prevents her from giving Darcy a second chance!. And Darcy is prejudiced because, if you read the book and may remember, in the beginning she overhears him talking about her and how and why he dislikes her!. He sticks with that first impression!. In a way, they're both proud and prejudiced, but "Pride" refers to Ms!. Bennet, and "Prejudiced" refers to Mr!. Darcy!. If you ever read the Forward of P&P, that might explain it better; I remember reading this in a copy of P&P!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

1) Sums up the subject matter nicely -- the one is proud and the other prejudiced!. The theme also plays out in the rest of the story, among the sisters, etc!. (One might be careful with this division however -- Darcy strikes me as both more proud and more prejudiced than Elizabeth, but one should ask whether Elizabeth isn't both proud and prejudiced as well!.)

2) The two abstract nouns reflect the fact that the two characters in the love story are the focus of the novel!.

3) The title is pithy -- short and memorable!.

4) The alliteration -- the repeated "Pr" -- makes it even more memorable and pleasing to the ear!.

The book is about love and about how pride and prejudice can make one misjudge a situation about it!. Because of their pride and their prejudice of someone, it can unknowingly blind them from the truth!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
