That is the thing, not all good stories are clean and ordered!. Look at Faulkner, he wrote as the mind flows in a stream of consciousness!. His works were hardly clean and yet they are revered as some of the greatest literature in American history!. But if you are just trying to tell a good story than you have lots of formulas to follow!. You have basically two types of fiction stories; The Heroic Journey and The Intruder (aka The Other) The Heroic Journey is the story about a person having to leave what is known to them into the unkown in order to learn something or bring something back!. Example: The Odyssey, Moby Dick, Lord of the Rings and even Harry Potter and Star Wars!. The Intruder tale is one where an entity invades into a world and changes it for better or for worse, the story is usually about the intruder being chased out or the environment changing to sustain it!. example: Dr!. Jekyll and Mr!. Hyde, The Last of the Mohicans, and basically any alien movie you have seen where they show up out of no where on Earth and stir things up!.

So really it depends on what kind of story you are going to write!. From there, well from there you can find tons of book on Creative Writing, I recommend a book by Heather Sellers called The Practice of Creative Writing: A Guide for Students
it is practical and starts at the beginning!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Indexing your chapters would be a good start!.

Keeping a running outline of what you want to put in your story--is another!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
