Edward is dangerous for Bella (he wants to drink her blood) so he is comparing himself to a lion, which would eat the innocent lamb!. He's basically saying the predator fell for the prey!.

It was said in the first book Twilight on page 274!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

he said it because him and bella were in the meadow and he was explaining why he shied away from her at first!. then bella said she would rather die than live without him and that she is an idiot!. he agreed then he said "and so the lion fell in love with the lamb!?" meaning edward fell in love with bella who is naturally supposed to be his prey!. and he could easily harm her if he wanted

then (i love his description) bella said "what a stupid lamb!." and he said "what a sick masochistic lion!."

The reason teh book stated "And so the lion fell in love with the lamb" is simple!. Edward-referd to as the lion- is dangerouse to bella!. Bella-the lamb- is extreamly breakable, also a lion tends to eat smaller animals such as lambs, and ironically enough Edward drinks from humans, thus he is the predator and she is the prey!. You most likely would have understoond the comment had you remebered the context:
"you already know how i feel of course" I finaly said "I'm here!.!.!.which roughly translated means i would rather die than stay away from you!." I frowned!. "I'm an idiot" "ou are an idiot"he asgreed with a laugh!. Our eyes met, and i laughed too!. We laughed together at the idiocy and sheer impossibility of such a moment!. "and so the lion fell in love with the lamb!.!.!.!.,"He murmered!. I looked away, hiding my eyes as i thrileld to the word!. Edward says that when bella and him are in the meadow (twilight)!. He said that caus eit makes sense!. think about it!. vampires are hunters and humans are prey to them!. Lions are hunters and lambs are prey!. It was kinda a metaphor!.
