Read 'Catch 22', one of the greatest books of all time!. But it's quite a hard read!. It's about a bombardier, Yossarian, who's afraid of everyone, because he's convinced that everyone wants to kill him and he moves back in time and recalls memories of the war and when he was recruited and everyone thinks he's crazy because he thinks that!. It tells the story of other people in the war as well!. But Yossarian is not crazy, because he wants to survive, but saying about people killing him all the time is crazy, since he doesn't have a lot of enemies, that's Catch 22, every way you go has an impossible solution and there are lots of those in the book!. It really makes you think about war and other subjects like religion as well!. But some parts are hilarious, because they act silly and say things in a nonsensical way!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

One of the great "classics" in this genre is "With the Old Breed" by Ed Sledge!. Often considered the best personal narrative of what it was like to fight in the Pacific in World War II!. A haunting book!.

Although the narrative begins when he was already an officer, "Steel My Soldiers' Hearts: The Hopeless to Hardcore Transformation of U!.S!. Army, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry, Vietnam" by David H!. Hackworth is a vivid, exhilarating account of applied leadership and how ordinary civilians became extraordinary soldiers!. The best personal narrative I've read yet on Viet Nam!. Almost as good is "We Were Soldiers Once!.!.!.And Young" by Harold G!. Moore and Joseph L!. Galloway!.

On a somber note, there is "Tiger Force: A True Story of Men and War" by Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss!. It describes how an elite force descended into a moral abyss and committed numerous atrocities!. An interesting companion to Hackworth's narrative!.

"Hard Tack and Coffee" by John Billings is perhaps the most famous personal narrative of a common soldier's experiences in the US Civil War!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The only book I know is Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, it tells about the life of a soldier during the war!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

For a more recent memoir, try "Jarhead," by Anthony Swofford (which is exceedingly better than the movie)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
