Question: What movie adaptations of books or comics have you seen that actually did a good or better job then the book!?
I felt White Oleander was great in both book and movie format, and I also thought V for Vendetta was good in both graphic novel and on screen!.

On the other hand, I usually do not like the movie as much as the book, or there will be some casting/setting choice or change that bothers me!. For example, the Harry Potter movies weren't very good compared to the books, and A Walk to Remember was much better set in the fifties!. In my humble opinion of course (wink wink lol!)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
I preferred Fight Club as a movie!. I've read it twice since seeing the movie and my opinion stands!. The movie does an excellent job from music, to acting, to the entire twist/ending thing!. also, there is so much that comes across better on screen!.

also, I liked Ghost in the Shell as a movie!. I actually preferred the more serious tone, and the philosophical tones came across better on screen I believe!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with you that books are almost always better than the movie versions!. However, I'm currently finishing "The House of Sand and Fog" and finding I like the movie much better: it's more tightly told and suspenseful, plus the two main actors were awesome!. The book is meandering and I'm getting tired of it!. also, this is the first time I've read the book *after* seeing the movie, so that might have something to do with it, too!. Usually our preference is for the version we got first, and that's almost always the book!.

Other than that, Harry Potter is the only movie I'd put in the same league as the book!. Both were very entertaining!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think all of these are excellent adaptations from the books or comics they are based on:

Interview with the Vampire
The Lord of the Rings trilogy
Rebecca
Pride and Prejudice (BBC 1995 version)
Iron Man
Batman the Dark Knight
Little Women (both the version from the 1940s and the version from the 1990s)
Jane Eyre (the 1940 version and the most recent one)
John Adams miniseries based on the book of the same title

Better than the book: North and South BBC miniseries and Master and CommanderWww@QuestionHome@Com

The Lord of the Rings movies certainly made the story more acccesible as the actually novels are very dense, good, but dense!. And for Harry Potter, the films were reasonably entertaining, whilst the books are awful!. The Godfather is better than the Mario Puzo novel!. Apocalypse now is better than the Joseph Conrad novel Heart of Darkness (and yes i know, it is only losely based on it)!. thats about it for meWww@QuestionHome@Com

Lord of the Rings was a fantastic adaption of the trilogy, but whilst I found the Harry Potter books fantastic (the first ones moreso) The omvie adaption's lack the quirky nature of the books and are too forused on Harry (*over acter*)!. The BBC version of Pride and Prejudice was a credit to the book, but the latest version fell below parr for me!. All I can think of !.!.!.!.!.for now!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I liked Diana Wynne Jones' "Howl's Moving Castle" very much, but I fell in LOVE with Hayao Miyazaki's animated film adaption of it!. The descriptions in the book were great as they are!.!.!.but words can't even begin to describe the beauty of the art in the film!. I nearly went berserk as I watched it, haha!. It was so GORGEOUS!.

(I'm an art fanatic, for the record)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle was far better than the book!. also, some people may hate me for saying this but, I think the Keira Knightley version of Pride & Prejudice was better than Jane Austen's novel!. I adore Jane Austen but honestly the movie is more compelling!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Wuthering Heights!.
I read that some years back, and despite it being one of the great books, I found it tiresome and dreadfully boring!. The film version however kept me hooked and well entertained!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
